Warehouse electricity use cut by 32% in a year

How a distribution warehouse switched to sensor-dimmed LED lights and let its air handling fans follow demand, measured on the site meter.

02

Lights and fans ran at full power all day

The warehouse lights were metal halide fixtures, left on from 6:00 to 22:00, even in aisles nobody used for hours.

Both air handling units ran at a fixed speed around the clock, so they drew the same power at night as during the busiest shift.

LED lights with sensors and fans that follow demand

We replaced 420 warehouse fixtures with HB-150 LED high-bay lights. Each one dims to 20% when its motion sensor sees no one for 10 minutes.

We fitted EC-90 fans to both air handling units, and BC-2 controls now set fan speed from CO2 and temperature readings instead of running at full speed.

The work was done at night over five weeks, so the warehouse kept shipping.

04

What changed

01

Lower electricity use

Annual electricity use fell from 1,480 MWh to 1,010 MWh, from the site meter and adjusted for weather.

02

Light only where people work

Aisle lights spend most of the night at 20%, and the shift lead sees lighting by zone on one screen.

03

Fans that follow demand

Fan speed now follows CO2 and temperature, and the units run at 40–70% speed for most of the day.

Questions about this case

01How did you measure the savings?

We compared 12 months of site meter readings before and after the work, adjusted for outdoor temperature.

02Will our building save the same amount?

It depends on your equipment, opening hours, and climate. We log your lighting and fan use for four weeks first and estimate the savings from that.
